Information Technology Risk Management: Selective Shared Risk Network

Computer and network security risks are serious threats to organizations. Knowing vulnerabilities and a limited sample of attacks is insufficient to perform organizational risk analysis. To evaluate the risk of future losses, risk theory requires a broad sampling of past losses by category of loss. The research team proposed a radically novel Selective Shared Risk Network (SSRN) so organizations can compare their risk profile to a benchmark of similar organizations where each company’s identity is anonymous, data risk is limited by storing it only on their local system, each company has controls release of their data and yet has access to aggregated, valid data that provides concise security risk data. Work resulted in two US Patents as well as European and Australian Patents (see PATENTS below)

Supporting Research and Collaboration through Integrated Middleware

The NSF Middleware Initiative was part of NFS’ overall effort to develop and disseminate software that lets scientists and educators share resources and collaborate across the Internet, providing practical deployment and evaluation via the NMI Integration Testbed. Managed by SURA, eight testbed universities closely coordinated an effort to deploy and evaluate NMI technologies, including GRID and directory components.

·       NMI Intra-Testbed GRID    9/19/2003–1/31/2005 – Georgia State University GRID demonstration and enterprise integration. A project to deploy an intra-testbed grid with a level of shared access adequate for demonstrating a persistent working grid to researchers. Including investigation of emerging portal software, exploring linking of grid authentication to enterprise authentication, and developing a catalog of existing and potential grid applications.

·       NMI Intra-Testbed GRIDNSF-REU Supplement    5/2003–8/31/2004 – Research Experiences for Undergraduates. Funding Research Experience for Undergraduates who worked with middleware development/deployment. SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES

Petit Science Center Visualization Wall & University Library CURVE. Managed implementation (Spring 2010) of 200 Million pixel visualization wall, one of largest high-resolution, tiled displays in the world. Nearly 200 events scheduled in first 18 months of use, with 1500+ persons attending. Faculty in computer science, geosciences, biology, chemistry, applied linguistics, international business, public health, library, art and history use visualization to understand complex data in highly interactive, exploratory, collaborative research. This led in 2014 to the follow-on “CURVE: Collaborative University Research and Visualization Environment” in the GSU University Library. In both instances, there was, and is, significant contributing involvement of students, undergraduate and graduate.

Chair, SURAgrid Governance Committee. SURAgrid is a consortium of organizations collaborating and combining high performance computing and advanced networking resources to improve the research and learning infrastructure of the SURA region. SURAgrid is an outcome of NSF Award Contract #ANI-0123937, 4/01/2002–8/31/2004: “Supporting Research and Collaboration through Integrated Middleware” funded through Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA), Educause and Internet2. This award was part of NSF’s overall effort to develop and disseminate software that lets scientists and educators share resources and collaborate across the Internet. SURA institutions participating in this award, including Georgia State University, continued a practical deployment and evaluation effort of grid middleware by creating SURAgrid. SURAgrid grew from a testbed of eight universities that participated in a closely coordinated effort to deploy and evaluate NMI technologies, including GRID and directory components. The vision for SURAgrid is to orchestrate access to a rich set of cyberinfrastructure capabilities to meet diverse needs of university researchers and educators. Capabilities being cultivated include locally contributed high performance computing resources, project-specific tools and environments, shared access to highly specialized high performance computing and cyberinfrastructure resources, and gateways to national and international cyberinfrastructure.

Information Technology Risk Management Working Group. Participated with Georgia State University researchers and technology professionals in investigating a novel approach to assessing information technology risk. Security losses are a crippling problem for information systems, often because of poor security investment decisions. To make well-informed decisions, there is a need for information security risk management benchmarking that requires the availability of industry-wide data on security breaches and losses. One reason for the non-availability of such data is that often the disclosure of such data carries the risk of damage to the reputation of the organization. Work has resulted in two US Patents as well as European and Australian Patents (see PATENTS below). TQN provides a secure way of anonymously sharing aggregated risk information, facilitating improvements in how sites manage and control technology risk. 3 students involved during 3 years.

Georgia State Information Integration Lab. Lab was an outcome of National Science Foundation ITR – Information & Intelligent Systems, Award # 0312636, 9/01/2003–8/31/2006 “ITR-Promoting Semantic Interoperability of Metadata for Directories of the Future.” The research investigated resolving semantics of heterogeneous metadata using a novel approach based on the proposition that monitoring, clustering, and appropriate visualization of cross-organizational metadata can help to identify patterns of practice and evolving standards, and to promote and facilitate the reuse of such metadata, which in turn can lead to automatic dynamic evolution of standards. Research generalized to design approaches for information integration in other areas of metadata, including web-based resources, or, for example, complex information security data. 21 students involved during 7 years.
